I want to introduce you to “The Renaissance Fellowship”, an initiative by SecretBuilders to acquaint students with great minds, thoughts, and deeds in human history and to deliver a first call to community service.
The great writers, musicians, artists, and scientists have been relegated to small scholastic niches in our society, and it is our commitment to reintroduce them to young minds.
This special program designed for 5th through 7th graders, spans 2 summers and a school year. And consists of the following three parts:
Summer Readings and Writings: During the first summer, students will read children’s classics, paraphrased excerpts of other writings, as well as select biographies of some the greatest innovators in history, and write about what they have read. They also attend weekly “virtual talk shows” online where they would interact with the great historical and fictional characters they have encountered.
Mentor Seminar: As part of the fellowship, Students will also get to meet as a group with a local Aspen institute Fellow who acts as role model and mentor, guiding them on their project and discusses their role in community leadership.
Community leadership: Students select a community project which they carry out during the school year. During the second summer, as Graduating Fellows, they pass on what they have learned by documenting and sharing their community project as well as leading discussions in the virtual talk shows for incoming Fellows.
